On the Asian side, in the ultra chic historical neighborhood of Moda, or Caferağa, Kadıköy, lies a trove of coffee houses which make up the heart of Istanbul’s third wave coffee scene.

With a rich coffee culture already embedded in Istanbul society for hundreds of years, finding a good cup is easy…finding an exceptional cup can be challenging.

There are a plethora of coffee hawkers, sometimes six or seven on one block, leading to major selection anxiety. As not all coffee houses are run by those with superlative palates and a slice of OCD, here is a hand-curated list of the best:

Montag Coffee Roasters, situated on the second floor of a building in one of the central squares of Kadikoy. This coffee house is notable for its commitment to sourcing quality beans, and meticulously roasting them in-house, using cropster technology to maintain consistent standards. The espresso is bold, rich, and full of flavor. They can even make Turkish coffees to order in a traditional cezve, with freshly ground, single origin beans if you want. The decor is artistic yet functionally well thought out, making excellent use of a small space. There is a balcony if you prefer your coffee outside, to watch street performances, demonstrations, and people walking beneath.
*They make their own pastries and desserts.

Mars has a comfortable, vintage modern feel with ample patio seating. The interior furniture is arranged around intimate sitting areas, including a long bar for throwing back a shot or two of espresso Italian style. The back has a protracted table to get a little daytime work done, facing a row of large windows which open up to a backyard view of soothing green nature. The owner, an avid local sailor, has added some interesting nautical touches that make the ambiance wholly unique. The shop bought up the last copper lined diving bells available in Turkey, and created unusual light fixtures which give off a burnished glow reminiscent of the planet Mars, the coffee shop’s namesake. They stock a variety of single origin beans roasted by Federal Coffee Company for pour overs and chemex, and their espresso is f-ing perfect.

180 Coffee Bakery This place gets my vote because the service is great, and they use delicious, high quality coffee roasted by Federal Coffee Company. They also have a scrumptious breakfast menu and make their own desserts and pastries in house. The decor is comfortable and cozy, the ceilings are quite high, and oddly enough, the floor looks and feels just like a farmhouse porch you might find in the Australian outback.

Cherry Bean Coffees roast their own beans in the back of the Moda location, which is always fun to watch if you happen to be there for it. Their coffee drinks are consistently well made, their bakery items are tasty, and they have multiple sitting areas, including a large garden area. The basement is an art gallery showcasing local artists as well as doubling as a good spot for hosting meetings because of the large, long tables. Conveniently located near one of the trolley stops across from a taxi stand.

ROP Coffee located just down the street from 180 Coffee Bakery, this tiny place serves excellent, rich and mello espresso, well made coffee drinks, and killer pancakes. They even have something called the Pan Burger consisting of aged, seasoned strips of tender, dried beef (pastirma), smothered with cream and cheddar cheese, then sandwiched between two fluffy pancakes & served with a small green salad.

Fazil Bey, a popular Turkish coffee house with multiple locations in and around Kadikoy. The original location, near Kadikoy’s bustling open air market being my favorite, and the one in Caddebostan being the worst. I’ve been served by the same manager for many years, and love watching him roast and grind the beans. He is a talented roaster, and thats why the coffee is so good at this particular location. Ten years ago this was the only Turkish coffee house on the block, but due to its continued success over the years, about four or five more have grown around the tiny shop. There is a small upstairs area to sit in and the bathroom is always clean and stocked with toilet paper, a truly GREAT feature for this type of space in such a high volume area. The service is excellent, and there is a quick turnover, so even if there are no obvious available tables, in under a minute one will open up.

Stand By Coffee owned by a couple who grew up in the neighborhood, and managed by one of the partners, a classically trained chef. Located just off the main square next to the highly esteemed vegetarian restaurant PASAJ Cook & Book. Although it’s a fairly small space, there is outdoor and upstairs seating available + outlets for charging your phone or laptop. They source coffee beans from Old Java, and make a wide variety of well executed coffee drinks.

Old Java originally located in the historical neighborhood of Galata, famous for its 600+ year old tower. This popular coffee house has come a long way. In an effort to provide a high quality product, they previously sourced beans from Stumptown roasters. Now they roast their own, and have opened an additional location here on the Asian side, in Moda.

No.7 Located about a ten minute dolmus ride from Kadikoy, in Suadiye, near the old train station. This place opened a few years ago, quickly gaining a strong base of devoted fans because it was the only coffee house in the area that sourced high quality beans, and made a great variety of drinks really well. Their espresso is consistently awesome, because the owner is meticulous about quality control. After trying so many lackluster coffee houses in the surrounding area, finding this place was a serious score. They have since moved down the street, into a larger shop, and are now closer to the famous avenue called Bagdat Caddesi, a stately, tree lined boulevard filled with restaurants and retail outlets, similar to the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
